Three Minute How-We-Do-Bonsai Answer!

A Bonsai Horror Story!

I subscribe to a number of bonsai club newsletters and often find interesting and helpful articles.

The Lee Squires' article in the April, Nashville Bonsai Society issue was shocking.

Here it is, in part:

“Three years ago I put up two hoop-style cold frames with white plastic covers for winter protection ... "

"My trees were happy and healthy that way for two years but 2012 was the year of the invasion !!!

In February, when our temperatures started to warm, I opened the front flap of the frames to let out some heat. I noticed some minor bark damage on my ginkgos ...

I closed the flaps when the temperature dropped and I opened them again in a couple of weeks. Then, I began to see more damage. ... I noticed that the trees in my ginkgo forest were leaning. I pulled on one and it came out of the pot. All roots were eaten down to nubs.”

Lee continued ... ”The voles tunnel into the pots and start eating the roots from the bottom up until they eat most or all of them. ... “

Lee Squire's agreed to be a BonsaiMary Guest Author and his complete story (and more photos) can be found at Bonsai Trees and Voles.

In Memory of Joe Samuels

It's hard to believe, it's been five years since Florida bonsai pioneer Joe Samuels passed.

For those of you who didn't know Joe, (and those who would just like to remember), here is a wonderful, earlier tribute to Joe written by Mike Sullivan in The Art of Bonsai.

Get 'em Up

This time of year everyone is juggling their trees for spring exposure; as well as repositioning after trimming and root pruning.

It's the perfect time to make sure they stay off the ground (at least). At best, raise them up to a position where you will see them better.

Bonsai on low shelves often get ignored. You see them, but think "I'll get that one later." And all too often, we don't.

Consider eliminating any shelves close to the ground.
