Sad News

Visiting “The Senator “ in Big Tree Park, Longwood, FL (as seen in this old postcard from was on my list of things to do this winter.

Acclaimed the oldest pond cypress (Taxodium ascendens) tree in the world.

125 feet (38 m) tall, with a trunk diameter of 17.5 feet (5.3 m), it was estimated to be 3,500 years old.

January 16, 2012 I awoke to the news that 'The Senator' had been felled by fire.

Although it has been officially declared “NOT arson”, there were were no indications of lightning in or around the area near the time of the fire.

Lime Sulfur Ban ?

I recently saw a posting announcing the end of lime sulfur availability in the US. Not totally true.

Some states have chosen not to re-register it for use in their state (most likely due to expense.)

It will continue to be available through several on-line sites.

Don't blame the EPA: “ EPA did not ban lime sulfur.  In May 2007, EPA completed a reregistration eligibility decision on the 'inorganic polysulfides,' which includes lime sulfur. EPA found that products containing this chemical as the sole active ingredient were eligible for reregistration. Some registrants canceled products, but this was not due to any action by EPA.”
