a Ficus
by: Carl L Rosner

Ron:
It looks like a Ficus retusa, but I am not sure.
Try this forum, where I am a member of the tropical group. We have a chat room once a month, as well as a place to ask questions.

Mary's site here is a terrific place to read about different types of trees, but if you need specific needs, especially to style your tree, you will have to invest a little time and study and read a lot. Welcome to addiction!

You have selected a good subject for your first bonsai. It is a Ficus (fig tree) imported from China. They are pretty easy to grow.

Those little stringy things growing off the trunk are what is called aerial roots. Sometimes people keep them, sometimes they cut them off.

In general Ficus like to be evenly moist (not soaking wet all the time). They are fast growers and the branches and leaves can be trimmed as often as needed to keep a nice shape. The roots will also need to be trimmed every year or so.

Your little tree is a tropical plant and will need to be protected from frost and freezes.

Read more about Ficus on this site. Go to the 'Types of Bonsai' page. Then to 'Ficus'.
