Convention Bonsai Photos

Bonsai Societies of Florida
Convention 2010
Kissimee, FL

Thanks for all the help with bonsai photos for this page.

The guest artist was Robert Steven - author of “Vision of My Soul” and “Mission of Transformation”.

(A 36 hour trip from Indonesia - one way!).

Robert did several programs - workshops, demonstrations and a critique.

He is shown here working a Ficus nerifolia workshop.

The Exhibit

Bob Yarhling sent us the following bonsai photos as a good representation of the trees on display.

2010 President's Award

The BSF President's Award frequently goes to a large impressive bonsai. cypress bonsai, bald cypress bonsai
This year there was a much talked about, but relatively small bald cypress bonsai.

A group of us stood observing it, and found several "faults" by traditional standards, but it was still a charmer. We liked it. Apparently, BSF president Charlie Michelson did too.

I asked Rick Jeffery about his Cypress.

"The tree is a whopping 17” tall ... I bought it from a vendor at a convention in Orlando at the Peabody several years ago ... for $30. "

Now there's another great reason to attend a bonsai convention - the bazaar area!

2010 The Joe Samuels' Award

Dorothy Schmitz, Ft. Myers, won the Joe Samuels' Award for this beautiful Casuarina bonsai.

Dorothy said it is "still a work in progress". It is much taller than it appears here. Approximately 45 inches.

We will look forward to seeing it again, soon.

I hope to have more details about this tree, on a forthcoming Casuarina page.

More Bonsai Photos

Conventions are busy. There is always something going on.

Ed Trout even had an impromptu buttonwood demonstration in the hallway! Great job Ed, and tell Mom we were all glad to see her.

This buttonwood bonsai was originally styled by Ed Trout. The new owner had allowed it to get a bit out of hand and generously donated it to BSF. Ed saw the tree and asked the owner if he would like to have him trim it up before the raffle. The owner accepted the offer and Ed went to work. With a lot of trimming and wiring, some time later Ed had completely restyled the tree. Back to the raffle. Someone got a real prize!

Ernie Fernandez, Ft. Myers, created a rock planting with an imported Fukien Tea and a wonderful Florida rock.

It was a struggle to get the perfect placement, but Ernie did it! bonsai rock planting, fukien tea, bonsai photo bonsai art, bonsai over rock, bonsai trees

In addition to Ernie's bonsai talent, he is a fine artist.

This is the drawing he created for the new owner of the Fukien Tea demonstration tree. Imagine this future root-over-rock.

In addition to those shown above, there were many more programs by other Florida bonsai artists ... Erik Wigert, Reggie Purdue, Jim Van Landingham, Toby Diaz, Alan Carver and Rob Kempinski!

The next time you see a notice of "bonsai convention coming to your area soon" Check into it!

I can promise new friends, lots of laughs, great things to buy and a real learning experience.
